I have recently made the move to Vancouver. Â I already miss Victoria in so many ways, but have so much excitement about the forward moving energy here! Â I was extremely involved in the childbirth communithy in Victoria, and plan to involve myself equally, if not more here.
The last birth I attended in Victoria was an amazing VBAC where mum had an unmedicated delivery of a posterior baby girl! Â What an honour to support her and her husband in this incredible feat. Â I had the honour of supporting many first time parents, and many parents who had felt disatsified with their previous birth experience and were working towards feeling more empowered and involved in their upcoming labour. Â I feel such joy and pride for my clients as they each achieve their unique goals!

In the close to 40 births I have attended they have – all been vaginal, one received an epidural (and this was a part of her birth wishes from the beginning), and one other client had a shot of fentanyl, many were succesful home births, and many were intervention free hospital births.
I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of my work as a doula – the prenatal meetings I have with my clients allows me the opportunity to gain insight into their fears, excitements and dreams for their birth, and it gives me the time to educate them about ways to help achieve their wishes. Â I help them prepare both physically and mentally for both the labour and the postpartum period.
I am currently accepting clients for January 2010 in Vancouver and surrouding area – so please do not hesitate to contact me for a free meet and greet to learn more about my services!  emily@naturalcreation.ca  or 604-349-6855.
From Registered Midwife Amy Brownhill:
“Emily is an extremely compassionate, creative and energetic doula. Â The feedback she received from my clients was outstanding and she quickly became a very popular and highly recommended doula in the Victoria area. Â Emily is experienced and well versed in both hospital and home birth. Â Emily has a very calm and confiident personality; she is an intuitive doula providing a combination of directive guidance and gentle physical and emotional support. Â Emily also acts exceptionally well in situations where obstetrical intervention is necessary. Â She is a supportive and clear advocate, knowing when to offer additional information or choice. Â She is very well educated and informed on practices to support normal/natural birth as well as common medical interventions in childbirth.”
A big part of getting through the difficult times of pregnancy and parenthood is creating a good support network. Meeting other parents that are experiencing the same joys and challenges is helpful in making the journey into parenthood smoothly. It’s important to know that you aren’t the only one having challenges coping with sleepless nights, and breastfeeding struggles, and natural worries. It’s also great to have other parents to get excited with you about a 5 hour stretch of sleep, or a sense of accomplishment at learning to breastfeed in the dark, or excitement about the next stage of development.
Early parenthood can often leave one feeling isolated. It’s a relatively new concept; living only with our immediate family. It used to be (and still is in many countries) that there were aunts and grandmothers to help and share with. We are not meant to do it alone! Many people get the physical and emotional support of a postpartum doula to ease the transition. It’s also important to have a friend to call and chat with, or meet for a walk with your little ones, or enjoy the sunshine at the park with – this opportunity to connect with people experiencing similar changes in life makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable!
Having parents at varying stages to you is helpful too! It’s wonderful at 36 wks pregnant to be able to chat with a mom who has recently given birth, and hear about her experience. It’s great when you have a 4 month old to be able to reassure the mom with the 2 week old that things do get easier!
These are a few reasons for Sarah and Emily hosting get togethers for our clients and anyone else interested! As the summer approaches we are hoping to have about 2 a month and hopefully hold some outside in this beautiful weather. Our goal is to promote a sense of community among parents, provide an opportunity for our clients to meet their back up doula, and offer a casual setting for expecting parents to hear first hand from our clients about our services and ask us questions.
Please contact us for more information about the next event!

Studies show numerous ways that doulas effect the outcomes of birth and the postpartum period.
A doula presence at the birth decreases the rate of medical intervention:
6 weeks after birth, mothers who had doulas were:

Chelsea is a Birth and Postpartum Doula servicing Calgary, Alberta.
I have always known that I wanted to work with women and children. It wasn’t until I first heard the word doula and began educating myself about natural pregnancy and childbirth that I knew I had found my path: I am currently working as a birth and postpartum doula.
I am a certified massage practitioner and an aromatherapy student with a focus on easing the discomforts of pregnancy and postpartum.
I believe in supporting families through this important time, and empowering them to trust their natural abilities to give birth and raise happy and healthy children.

I can’t believe the time has come for me to leave Victoria. I’ve had an amazing opportunity to start my doula career here in such a great community. The past year I’ve had the fortune of attending so many great births and meeting so many wonderful families.
In a week I’ll be moving to CALGARY ALBERTA and I am now accepting clients for 2009!
