Warding of the Winter Colds!

We’ve been busy in our house fighting off all the sicknesses that come with winter and busy holiday seasons!  The last bug that has hit our house is a nasty chest cold, I fortunately warded it off with heaps of vit C, hand washing, and sheer determination but my kids and our nanny were not so lucky!

As soon as my baby starting showing symptoms I went out and got her some homeopathic remedies, some saline for her nose, and welcomed her natural instinct to breastfeed constantly.  Her body knows that she needs all the immune boosting properties in my breastmilk, and the skin to skin doesn’t hurt with the recovery process either.

As for my 5 yr old – he also has been getting doses of homepoathics, spaced between are doses of vitamin C, hot lemon and ginger with honey drinks, and yesterday I made him and my nanny a Decongestant Chest Rub.  Recipe to follow!

“The [Cheeky Baby Bum] balm is easy to apply and protected her skin very well. I was very pleased with the results of using the Cheeky Baby Bum Balm. After a days time her rash was gone. Definitely a product to be had if you aren’t into the stinky stuff sold on the market or looking for a more organic product.”

How To Make Healing Postpartum Pads

Natural Creation’s Postpartum Wellness Tea contains the healing herbsCalendula and Comfrey. These Herbs are known for their ability to repair and rejuvenate skin cells, making them ideal for healing after childbirth. Icing your perineum after birth can help bring down swelling and numb discomfort.

Here is how to make healing frozen pads with Natural Creation’s Postpartum Wellness Tea.

Step One:

Boil one liter of water. Remove from heat.

Step Two:

Add tea bag to boiled water. Place lid on pot and steep for 2 hours.

Step Three:

Over the sink, pour infused water onto a thin maxi pad until the pad has fully absorbed the water before water starts dripping.. Repeat with other pads until water is used up or you have the desired number of pads (remaining water can be added to hip baths).

Step Four:

Re-wrap pads in their original packaging, place them in a ziplock bag and in the freezer.

Step Five:

Place frozen pad on top of whatever heavy flow pad you are using for your lochia and this will also absorb the liquid as it melts to your body heat.

After baby is here, you may not have the extra time to prepare pads, so plan ahead. Making Postpartum Pads is a great early labour project. Have the instructions available so your support team can make them for you if you run out of time or if you need more.

Postpartum Wellness Tea Pads are a must have for any new mom, and all Natural Creation doulas make these pads for their clients!  If you are an expectant mom, or a doula wanting to provide your clients with this amazing healing relief, purchase a pack of 4 Postpartum Wellness Bath Teas to make the pads and healing infused water for baths!

Essential Oil Safety

There are many great uses for certain essential oils in the last two trimesters of pregnancy and especially during labour and the postpartum period. However, some essential oils are not safe or useful when pregnant due to their powerful effect on the body during this sensitive time. Below is a list of essential oils with properties that are not desirable when pregnant, and should be avoided.

Oils Not Recommended for Pregnancy

· Basil

· Cajeput

· camphor

· Cedarwood

· Cinnamon

· citronella

· Clary sage (not recommended until full term – OK during labour)

· Clove

· Cypress (OK after 5 months)

· Fennel

· Hyssop

· Jasmine (not recommended until full term – OK during labour)

· Juniper

· Lemongrass

· Myrrh

· Niaouli

· Nutmeg

· Parsley

· Pennyroyal

· Peppermint

· Ravensara

· Rosemary

· Sweet marjoram

· Sage

· Thyme

· Tarragon

· Yarrow

None of the essential oils listed are found in Natural Creation’s pregnancy products. Clary Sage, Jasmine, and Lemongrass are found in products created for use during labour and the postpartum period. Our product labels are conveniently coded to help you determine which stage of the childbearing year the product has been created for. The essential oils chosen for each product are appropriate for the stage they are labeled. Our products are created with a low concentration of essential oils appropriate for the sensitivity of pregnant & new moms, and babies. We do not recommend the use any of our products in your first trimester and suggest consulting your healthcare provider or aromatherapist if you have any medical conditions that would contradict the use of essential oils.

Please feel free to contact Emily and Chelsea anytime if you have any questions about our products and the ingredients we use.

Fairs, fairs and more fairs!!

Wow, what a busy couple of weeks we’ve had at Natural Creation!

We had our first birthday! It hard to believe its been one whole year since we first launched our products at the Vancouver Island Baby Fair and we’ve come full circle participating again this year!

It was a great event with bellies and babies everywhere. We handed out tons of free samples and gave away three gift baskets.

It was great to be apart of such a wonderful local community of people who love women and babies as much as we do!

This weekend we participated in the BC Woman’s Show and had another great weekend! Not as many bellies but lots of grandmas and aunties. We launched a whole new line of “Everyone” products what we will be adding to our site this week! So stay tuned! They were a hit at the show!

We’ve got a couple of weeks to regroup then we’re back at it with a ton of Christmas craft fairs. Check out our homepage for a list of where we’ll be and keep checking back because we might be adding more! Its a great oppertunity for you to buy our stuff in person and come say HI to us!

Labour items check list

As a doula there are certain things I must have with me when I go to a birth. Sometimes I don’t use any of it some times I use it all!

Here is a check list I recommend for moms when preparing for their birth whether at home or in the hospital.

- Comfy labour clothes – a robe is a good idea, it’s easy to get in and out of. If you’re going to the hospital don’t forget a change of clothes to go home!

- Warm socks and slippers – the hospital can be chilly and your feet may get cold.

- Snacks and drinks – easy to eat simple foods that will give you energy and keep you hydrated – “emergence-c” packets that you add to water are a great idea. Your partner will also need to keep their energy up so have snacks on hand for them too.

- Favourite item – a pillow, blanket, photo anything you find comfort in.

- Exercise ball- find out if your hospital or midwife has one you can borrow.

- Massage oil - massage has many great relaxation benefits during labour. I bring our Labour of Love Oil, it has the added benefit of essential oils that relax the labouring mom and help to strengthen and regulate contractions. You may also want to bring a massage tool for when your partner’s hands get tired!

- Lip balm

- Candles – soft lighting is great for staying relaxed and focused, if your hopsital doesn’t alow candles you can find battery operated ones that do the trick.

- Heating bag – great for low back and abdominal pain

- Music – think about what music you might find relaxing and have it on hand. If you are going to the hospital you may need to bring a portable CD player or MP3 player.

- Room and body mist – a scented mist can be used to keep away unpleasant oders. You can also mist your face and neck to keep your temperature down. I bring our Fresh Space Mist to help neutralize orders and energize the room.

After the Birth (if you are in the hospital)

- Baby items – you’ll need an outfit for the baby to go home in. I also recommend bringing your own soap to the hospital if you plan on bathing your baby before going home ( the hospital soap is quite harsh on sensitive skin). You will need to bring the car seat to the hospital and your baby will need to be fitted to it by the nursing staff before you will be allowed to leave.

- Phone number list – you’ll probably want to call everyone you know after your little one is born so bring along your address book. Also jot down names of local lactation consultants in case you need any help breastfeeding in the early days.

- Nursing items – bras, pads and nipple cream will keep you comfortable during the early stages of breastfeeding.

- Toiletries – you may end up staying a few days in the hopsital so remember your comb, toothbrush shampoo etc. Ear plugs are also a good idea in the unfortunate event of a noisy roommate.
