Hi cymbalisty,

I'm sorry to hear your are dealing with this. It's a hard time – there is no doubt!

If you are looking for information about medications you would need to talk to your health care provider, and to do your own reading about what medications are safe while breastfeeding this website: http://www.motherisk.org/women/index.jsp is an EXCELLENT resource. There's always up to date research, and if you don't feel up to the task of reading through it, there is a 1-800 number you can call to talk to someone and ask questions.

In addition to chatting with your health care provider I would suggest: take time to yourself if it's possible, get the help of family and friends – and/or a postpartum doula, connecting with other new moms that can relate to the exhaustion etc., time outside in the fresh air, and do something for yourself – what makes you feel good usually? going for a pedicure? taking a relaxing bath? a walk? I recently found that escaping into a book was a good way for me to get some "me" time without having to plan an outing.

Best of luck, and I'd love to hear what things you find helpful!

I'd love to hear from other mamas how they've coped through the baby blues as well.

One thing that has helped me when I feel low in energy is to actually go do something like going for a dip in the pool– a wonderful way to heal. In an hour, I will sit in the hot tub, baby pool and big pool moving from all the pools ( at my local center) and just float. I might do aqua fit exercise that I know but not always. Sometimes when I would be really tired and drained and not sure how I made it to the pool I will float more. Just allowing the water to move my body. I have found by doing this I am listening to my body more. I have also found by not pushing myself to be active with a lot of excercise but to just breath quiety to myself I am able to relax. This helps for either the rest of the day or before bed to help me sleep better. But then there are also other days where I will be more active and that has helped as well. Such as doing heavy garden work can be very healing as you are focused on the earth which will allow you to take a moment away from baby. One last thing is to be with yourself. Listen to your body and just take one day at a time. Realize some days you will have a lot of energy and some days not so much. Listen to your baby as well as they are going through a lot of changes. It's OK not to do everything at once.

I wrote down how I felt during my blues with my first, and that really helped.

It really does depend on how blue you're feeling, I don't think my time was very severe, but it certainly shook me as someone who had always wanted and loved kids that I didn't want to be around my daughter sometimes. And I felt so guilty that I wasn't being the best parent for her, and that made me feel even worse. Thankfully getting out of the house, having some time away from baby (even if Daddy just took her out for a walk so the house was quiet for 30 mins), and talking to people about it really helped. I genuinely thought when I said how I was feeling that people would say "you're crazy, you should be enjoying this time!" but everyone was really supportive and encouraging and it gave me a lot of strength.
Hope it the clouds part for you soon :)
